The other day something really stuck with me when I was thinking about real estate investing and how it relates to business.
You might think the two aren’t really related and you’re probably right…but hear me out. I realized that…
There is no value in a house or rental property in itself until you get a buyer or a tenant.
Because houses don’t write you checks. Humans do!
Many newer business people don’t seem to really understand the wisdom of this.
They spend hours upon hours, weeks and weeks, and sometimes years…
Acquiring new skills, learning the latest tools, spend hours on trainings, get even more education, work for free to get countless case studies, chase after testimonials, stack their wins, record video after video after video BUT… None of that has any value if you don’t take it to the next step.
Find someone to write you a check for your services.
Don’t get me wrong…Skills are great, case studies are awesome, testimonials are wonderful…but none of that matters if you don’t then take it and find a way to monetize it.
Just as if you would buy 20 rental properties and never actively looked for renters. What do you think would happen?
The correct answer is:
The assets would depreciate and it would also be rough on your cashflow. I mean…can you imagine that you have 20 rental properties just sitting there?
You would need to hire a gardener, maintenance person, maid and maybe even a pool guy! And you don’t even have the money from your renters to pay for all the upkeep.
What a waste!
Please remember that exchange creates value because that ensures you get money!
Keep building your portfolio, work on your skills, get those testimonials…but don’t just stop there! Because it won’t do you any good.
It just means that you keep spinning your wheels and need to hire a maintenance team for your proverbial rental properties…without even having any extra money to pay for them.
Go and find people that pay you for your skills you have already invested in, go stack your wins, because if you don’t go and get clients everything you have in front of you doesn’t actually do anything for you.
It also means that you don’t validate your worth or actually put your skills/talents/education to good use.
Whenever I’m in doubt, feel overwhelmed or get distracted by another shiny object…the best thing for me to do is to…
Stop accumulating skills and start securing clients!
Because remember: you wouldn’t accumulate rental properties and never get any renters either.
