Combat Creative Crashes

Combat Creative Crashes

8 Tips for Overcoming Creative Crashes and Why it’s Okay to Have Them

“You mean I have to come up with more content?”

Yep! We have either heard or said these words before as we begin plotting out our content or plan for the coming month ahead. With social platforms requiring the skill of creativity on such high rotation, I promise you there is a such thing as a creative crash.

It like twisting a wet washer, ringing it out until there is no drops of water left until the washer is soaked again in the waters of ideas and inspiration.

Managing social channels, if we are driving our creative tanks empty, we can be pushing a boulder up a hill. You must remember ‘WE ARE HUMAN’ and sometimes we need to STOP and PAUSE in order to stoke the creative fire in the belly so that it can burn on again.

  1. Schedule some YOU time.

This seems like a ‘self-care’ aspect, but believe me, when you have been managing socials and developing content or ideas you use A LOT of energy. By taking some scheduled time out for yourself, whether it be 5 minutes or a day, you wind that monkey mind down and allow it some SHHHH time.

  1. Swap Office for Nature.

Do you work in an office? Lots of people or just yourself? Sometimes swapping your office for nature or a different setting can spark the idea generator. As you put yourself in a different setting, you will observe things different instead of just habit. You never know what might inspire you.

  1. Try something new!

Get out of your comfort zone and try something new. It will do wonders for your soul and creative energy. You’ll meet new people and gain a new skill and might find inspiration from the experience! It could be something as simple as a cooking class, kick boxing, speed dating or a day course in film production.

  1. Check out content strategy ideas from leaders!

There are some social media experts out there that are so generous with their ideas and content! We have so many opportunities to learn and adapt these methods into our own practices. If you check out the social land scape you will find so many content idea generation offers! Rachel has a brilliant 365 day content calendar that is a great tool!

  1. Get involved in your community!

Whether this is online or in your own area, get involved in your community. There is power in the crowd and when we collaborate with others, we co-create powerful things!

  1. Project Yes and Project No

The creativity fuel tank is limited, so it is best spent on projects that you are naturally interested in. There is nothing worse than saying ‘yes’ to a project that you dislike and finding that you have NO motivation to get any part of it done. It takes twice the creative fuel to get going on things that don’t interest you, so knowing when to say ‘no’ and pass it on is important.

  1. The Perfection Correction

Oh man! I could write a whole paper on the perfection correction but here is just a little snippet. If you have a perfectionist tendency, there is a pretty good chance your agonizing over a project you’re 99% happy with. The trick is to not be afraid of failing, in the digital age amendments to ANYTHING can be made so quickly, so loosen up a little, creativity likes to FLOW.

  1. You are not alone!

If you have used the combatting methods and you are still feeling blocked, you are not alone. Creative crashes are OKAY! Someone of the most famous writers experienced creative blocks and then went on to write some of their best work. When asked about it, they all attribute it to the process! It’s okay to turn off the creative metre every now and then!

When you are feeling the impending creative crash, get out and try some of the combat methods! I run a lot of social accounts, so when I feel like I need to stop, I go play some music or do the things that I love. Sometimes I’ll even create content for things that I’m interested in. It’s still creative, but has no pressure attached!

Building creative self-care methods into your life should be mandatory for any creative!  We do our best work when we feel good, when we are aligned with our own creative centre, so YOU do YOU.

Until Next Time.
