Have you ever tried the wrong key to open a lock? Did it open?
If you have you know: the key must fit the lock.
Introducing the FB Ads Swipe File Success Key
I’ll be walking you through:
What works…
What doesn’t…
And what do we do with ALL THAT data…
Before I go all “keys to the Queendom of crushing it with this FB Ads Swipe file” on ya, first…a caution, a definition and a disclaimer.
Caution: don’t just copy and paste the swipe file and expect it to be the magic key.
Definition: this swipe file is a distilled sample of what has actually worked and works in my business for me personally and my clients. It is the product of thousands of ads, in depth testing, and millions of dollars spent. It’s not some PLR version, but the real deal from the monarchy itself. This is what worked and works!
Disclaimer: a swipe file is a huge head start. It’s like we’re part of a relay race and me and my team have run the first three legs of the race and have just handed you the baton. We’ve done the work, picked the right lane, set the pace, and even got you a huge lead. All you have to do is take the baton and run with it!
Alright, now that that’s^ over with, back to keys-to-the-Queendom: how to make this swipe file (or any swipe file) work for you.
To be honest, there’s one key that opens Swipe File Success and that key is COPY.
Copy is where Ads dive or thrive and is the focus of this post. But copy isn’t just words on a page; it’s style, format, tempo, intent, and a host of other things that determine the copy’s match quality–it’s fit.
The key (copy) must fit the lock.
Here is how you can ensure a perfect “keyed” fit so your COPY can unlock Ad success, and open the door to your Swipe File.
- Take Notes
“Acquiring the habit of note-taking is a wonderfully complementary skill to that of listening.”
— Richard Branson
Take your favourite notebook–or open up your laptop–and analyse. Put on your detective badge and channel your inner Sherlock Holmes as you look for clues so you can fashion the perfect key. What do you see?
- Is there a pattern to the copy?
- Is it short or long?
- Any bullet points or lists?
- How is it segmented?
- What about Emoji’s?
- Go Deeper
Go through the copy as a whole and identify the pattern, flow, and impact
Hunter Thompson (creator of the Gonzo style of writing) would frequently write out the works of Hemingway and Fitzgerald so he could feel the cadence of a masterpiece. And then he wrote one, or his version of one. This key message here is this: understand the structure, the flow, the cadence and its impact.
What is the structure? Is it:
- Open (intriguing “hook”)–> Case Study (here is how it works for others)–> Benefits (what the product promises)–> Testimonial (first hand account)–> Close (call-to-action: do you want this too?)
- Or Does it flow differently?
Once you understand the success keys embedded in the structure you can repeat them, and repeat your success!
“I thrive in structure. I drown in chaos.”
–Anna Kendrick (Scrappy Little Nobody)
What does each segment focus on or ask of the reader?
- Open (attention grabbing through what?)
- Case Study (who are they, are they like me/buyer?)
- Benefits (what does it promise? How will it help?)
- Testimonial (do I believe them?)
- Close (is it clear and easy to take the next step?)
“Analysis is the art of creation through destruction.”
–P.S. Baber (Cassie Draws the Universe)
I might change the word destruction to de-con-struction, but the message holds. If you can see the individual pieces and how they fit together you can move them around leading to endless variations to test. One small change could open another level of success!
- Use it as inspiration (this goes for any Ad, especially if you bought!)
Keep in mind this is your Ad for either your product or your client–get inspired! You’re conspiring with the universe to co-create something. That’s no small thing!
“The person in the grip of inspiration has received, as if by magic, some new perception, some holistic understanding, along with the feeling she is capable of more than she thought”.
–David Brooks (NY Times Columnist)
Many Ads experts and copy writers keep a swipe file of their “best stuff”. It’s great to have everything in one place so you can revisit and restack your wins, get inspired by other great ads or copy, and set your mind into the flow of inspiration.
- Swipe, Copy, Paste and Stamp
I’ve lost my love for the word “hack”, but “stamp” I can get behind! Don’t hack it, model it and put your stamp on it!
Go through the swiped ad line by line and add your voice, insert your products and its benefits, and state your promise as well as your unique call to action. Put all the pieces together and you’ll unlock Ad success for you or your clients.
“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together”.
–Vincent Van Gogh
So there you have it, four ways to groove your key to Ad copy success unlocking the treasures hidden in your swipe file. We’ll dig into the “what not to do” and “what data not to dump” in future posts.
Make sense?
