When I first started posting short-form video content, I made every mistake.
I spent hours filming. Editing. Staring at my screen, thinking “this is good… right?” Only to get… 217 views. On a good day.
But then I started studying the psychology behind what makes someone stop scrolling and actually watch. I reverse-engineered what worked (from viral creators and my own top-performing Reels). I tested different formats, story arcs, even sentence length.
And one piece stood out as make or break: the HOOK.
Not the trending audio. Not the aesthetic. The first 2 seconds – the hook.
Once I mastered that, my views didn’t just increase – they multiplied. One video with the right hook brought in over $10K. Another? Drove 90,000 new followers in 6 months.
This blog walks you through the exact hook formats I teach inside my programs – plus real examples, story structure, and how to tailor them to your offers, your voice, and your audience.
Let’s dive on in!

Why Your Hook Is More Important Than Your Hashtag Strategy
I don’t care if you’re using the perfect mix of hashtags. If your hook is weak, your video is toast.
The hook is the moment that makes someone say: “Wait… what is THIS?”
It’s not about being clever. It’s about creating curiosity and clarity so your viewer knows:
- This is relevant to me
- There’s something valuable here
- I’m going to get a quick win

10 Proven Hook Formats That Still Work in 2025
These aren’t gimmicks. These are proven psychological structures that increase watch time, boost reach, and prime people to convert.
1. “Most people do X… but here’s what I do instead.”
Watch time boost: 31%
Why it works: Creates contrast and sparks curiosity
Real example: Most people post content every day to grow. I post once a week and still get 500K+ views.
2. “You’ve been lied to about X…”
Watch time boost: 27%
Why it works: Disrupts belief patterns and builds trust when you follow up with value
Real example: You’ve been lied to about how often you need to post. Here’s what I do instead…
3. “If I had to start over from scratch…”
Watch time boost: 42%
Why it works: Future pacing meets personal story – it’s aspirational but grounded
4. “You don’t need [X] to [Y]”
Watch time boost: 35%
Why it works: Relieves pressure and introduces a counterintuitive method
Real example: You don’t need to post every day to grow. You need a content system.

Bonus: 3 Hooks I Use With Clients That Convert to SALES
Let’s talk about converting watchers into buyers – not just vanity views.
Here are 3 hook styles I’ve used with coaching clients (and in my own business) that led directly to opt-ins and sales:
5. “How I made $10K from one Reel (without pitching)”
This one? Drove leads to my IG Beta Program using nothing but a free guide and an automated ManyChat funnel.
What made it work?
- The title had a result and a tease
- The video delivered real value
- The caption + CTA led straight to the freebie (with a soft pitch on the backend)
6. “This one change 10xed my content reach”
We paired this hook with a graph in the video. It went viral in cold traffic and brought in 5,000+ new leads.
7. “Most people ignore this content blindspot… and wonder why they’re not getting sales.”
You can fill in the blank for your niche – but that open loop makes people need to know the answer.

A Quick Note on Delivery: Script vs. Off-the-Cuff
You don’t have to be a natural speaker or charismatic on camera.
But you do need structure.
Here’s my favorite “anchor format” for a high-converting short-form video:
- Hook (first 2 seconds)
- Story (set the stage fast – 1–2 sentences)
- Value (one quick, actionable point or framework)
- CTA (comment, click, save, etc.)
I script about 70% of my videos and ad-lib the rest – and most of my students do the same.
If you try to wing it start to finish, your hook will suffer. But if you over-script it, you’ll sound robotic. Use bullet points, not paragraphs.
How to Build a Hook Library That Works on Autopilot
If you batch content (which you should), your hook library is GOLD.
Here’s how I build mine (and what I teach inside The Social Clique):
- Each time I write a great hook, I save it in a Google Doc or Notion
- I tag it by style: Pain Point, Personal Story, Counterintuitive, Question, etc.
- I test it across formats – what works in a carousel may CRUSH in video
- Once I find a winner, I repurpose it 2–3 more ways
Most people think content has to be “new.” That’s the trap. You don’t need more hooks – you need better hooks, recycled smartly.
Want my actual batching templates + content systems? The 24 Hour Content Machine shows you how I plan, script, and repurpose 90 days of Reels in a day – using hooks that work: https://rachelpedersen.clickfunnels.com/24-hour-content-machine
Let’s Talk Results
One of my students – a photographer who didn’t consider herself a “content creator” – used just one of these hooks with a 15-second video sharing her booking process.
She went from:
- 430 views per post…
- To 73,000 views in 48 hours
- And 3 new discovery calls booked within a week
We didn’t touch her brand. We didn’t overhaul her funnel. We just fixed the hook.
That’s the power of clarity and positioning. When your hook lands, the rest of your content has a chance to work.
Final Thoughts
Great hooks aren’t just about attention – they’re about intention.
You’re setting the tone. You’re earning trust. You’re opening a loop that only your video can close.
And when you nail that? You’ll not only see your reach rise – you’ll start turning watchers into subscribers, clients, and customers.
Use the templates. Steal the formulas. Make them your own.
But whatever you do – don’t post another video without testing your hook.
