THE TRUTH ABOUT NICHING DOWN AS A FREELANCER: WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED TO KNOW

By Rachel Pedersen

Niching down does NOT mean locking yourself in a box, picking a title you hate, or sticking with one offer forever just because a random Instagram coach told you to.

But also? The “do everything for everyone” strategy? That one’s a fast track to burnout.

So where’s the middle ground? Right here.

I’ve built my own business from the ground up (and coached thousands of freelancers doing the same), and I can promise you this:

You don’t need to niche down to be successful. But if you do it right (or specialize) – you’ll scale faster, work with better clients, and stop second-guessing yourself every time someone asks, “What do you do?”

Let’s talk about how to niche like a top 1% freelancer… without boxing yourself in.

first: why niching gets so overhyped

You’ve heard it a million times:

“The riches are in the niches.”

(Which, by the way, doesn’t rhyme if you pronounce it right.)

The problem is – most advice around niching is vague at best and paralyzing at worst.

Pick one service. Pick one ideal client. Pick one industry.

Cool. But what if you’re multi-passionate? What if you’re just getting started and you’re not sure who you like working with yet? What if your favorite projects have nothing in common on paper?

Here’s the truth:

Most freelancers don’t need to niche right away. But they do need to communicate their value clearly.

That’s where we start.

niche ≠ narrow

This is where people get stuck. Niching down doesn’t mean:

  • You can never change your mind.
  • You have to pick the perfect title.
  • You’re trapped doing the same project forever.

What it does mean is getting known for something.

A vibe. A result. A framework. A bold belief.

You can niche by industry (e.g. dentists), by outcome (e.g. grow your email list), by service (e.g. UGC TikToks)… or even by how you do what you do.

The point is clarity. And clarity is magnetic.

My personal favorite is to SPECIALIZE based on the services I offer :]

People can’t refer you if they don’t understand what you do in 10 seconds or less.

how to know when to niche (and when to wait)

Ready to niche?

  • You’ve worked with 3+ clients and noticed patterns you like
  • You know what kind of work drains you (and what doesn’t)
  • You’ve gotten results in a specific area
  • You’re tired of rewriting your bio every week

Not quite ready?

  • You’re in learning mode
  • You’re exploring different types of projects
  • You’re still figuring out what feels fun vs. what feels forced

You don’t have to rush this. But you do have to be visible.

Let people know what you’re up to – even if you’re still in beta phase.

my niching journey (spoiler: it was messy)

I didn’t wake up with a niche. I stumbled into one.

In the early days, I did everything from blog editing to cold outreach to social media management for hair salons.

Eventually, I noticed:

  • I LOVED organic content.
  • I was good at turning one idea into 30 posts.
  • I enjoyed working with entrepreneurs who were scrappy, creative, and obsessed with learning.

Boom. That became my niche.

Not because I forced it – but because I followed the momentum.

4 ways to niche that don’t feel like handcuffs

  1. Niche by problem solved. > “I help entrepreneurs turn 1 idea into 30 pieces of content.”
  2. Niche by personality. > “I’m the TikTok manager for creators who hate dancing.”
  3. Niche by service. > “I write killer email sequences that actually convert.”
  4. Niche by belief. > “You don’t need more followers. You need better content.”

When your niche feels like a playground, not a prison – you’ll actually stick with it.

final word: you don’t need a niche to start – you need momentum

You can learn while you earn. You can pivot mid-project. You can evolve while still being profitable.

But don’t let “I don’t have a niche” be the reason you stay stuck.

Pick something. Talk about it. Work with real humans. And watch what unfolds.

The truth? Most of the best niches aren’t picked. They’re discovered.

And the sooner you start testing, the faster you find yours.

Dolly Parton once said in an interview that she wr Dolly Parton once said in an interview that she wrote Jolene and I Will Always Love You on the same day. ✨

I have thought about that contrast more than I care to admit. It says a lot about who she was and how she lived.

Because those two songs are opposites… and they both are her reclaiming her beautiful power (in different ways).

She wrote one of them from the top.

Leaving Porter Wagoner’s show. Walking away from the man who put her on television. Choosing to say goodbye kindly when she did not have to be kind about it at all.

She wrote the other one from the floor. No power. No plan. A woman asking another woman for mercy about her own husband.

Same day. All the power in one hand and none of it in the other.

But my favorite thing is that she didn’t just write them…

She released both. 🎀

She could have kept the vulnerable, scary one in a drawer. Nobody would have known.

She put it out anyway, and it became one of the most covered songs anybody has ever written.

That is how she lived the whole sixty years.

Heart on her sleeve. Song on her lips.

Never a version of herself she was too proud to let us see.

My people hide the ugly parts and messy bits away.

She didn’t. 🤍

So much love,
Rachel

She meant so much to so many of us. And man, she practiced what she preached ❤️🫶

I don’t have words to express how impactful her words, songs, and outlook on life have been for me over my life.

So I’ll allow your own words to reflect back to us the impact of your life.

My dream was to become RICH.

I wanted a better quality of life SO BADLY.

Becoming rich felt like the only way to make it happen.

Now I’m a single mom of 3... 💔

And my new dream is to build wealth (while empowering others to do the same).

I want true freedom to CHOOSE...
Generational wealth... .
Ownership...

And a safety net a mile wide 🙌

If that appeals to you, you’re going to love the ‘next-level’ transparency I am about to share over the coming months.
This breaks mine and Poul H. Pedersen’s hearts to This breaks mine and Poul H. Pedersen’s hearts to share.

After nearly 13 years of marriage, we are getting a divorce 💔

We made this decision together - it is not repairable.

A few of you knew something was happening. Thank you for respecting our privacy through these painful matters. I’m sharing this because we shared our relationship with you. I don’t want to lie or pretend like nothing is happening.

Poul is an amazing dad. We are raising the children together as partners 🙏

This is uncontested and amicable. We are not fighting.

He’s also my best friend. Please please please do not attack him or assume about him through this. He’s the father of my children, so hurting him hurts me.

We will only be sharing the full story as needed to navigate our next steps.

Please pray for Poul and the children. Pray for our families. Please pray for me for wisdom to know what to do next.

My heart is beyond broken. His is as well.

But my feet are underneath me, and I have a clear vision of the path I need to take for our children ❤️ their lives and futures above all now.

Edited to add… sorry about my ManyChat responder. I don’t want to look at a computer to turn it off while I’m crying.
By referral only — this one is close to our hearts By referral only — this one is close to our hearts. 🫶

Poul H. Pedersen and I are looking for a Household Manager for our family home near Lake Minnetonka: someone who loves making a space beautiful, orderly, and calm, and who genuinely enjoys helping a family run well.

I’ll be honest about why this is referral-only. We’re a family first, and our children’s lives are private. Letting someone into our home means letting them into our world — so trust and discretion matter to us just as much as skill. The right person will understand that instinctively, and hold our family’s privacy the way they’d want their own held.

Here’s what the role looks like day to day:

- Coordinating home services and keeping everything running smoothly — groceries, systems, the hundred small things
- Building processes that make life lighter, and adapting them intuitively as you learn how we live
- Light cleaning and tidying, and cooking
- Driving the kids and being a steady, caring presence when Poul or I travel
- Helping care for our children — you’re not here to be mom or dad, but you’re important in helping us raise them
- Holding short-term tasks and projects while keeping an eye on the long game

What we’re really looking for is a person, more than a résumé: someone adaptable, nurturing, and calm — the kind of steady that can carry a lot at once without losing their warmth. Someone who listens for the details, takes good notes, and reads a moment well. And someone who understands that when we’re with family, I’m simply mom and wife. 🫶

A few practical notes:
- Reliable transportation to the Lake Minnetonka area of Minnesota is a must
- Ideally 3–5 days a week
- Compensation is discussed individually, candidate by candidate
- Interviews are by invitation

If someone you love and trust comes to mind, I’d be so grateful for the introduction. ❤️
