We usually fall under the assumption that we need a million followers or fans or subscribers to make something magical happen but the reality is, if you want to go mega viral, you only actually need 100 – 1000 true believers who love your content.
Crazy right?!
I spend a lot of time researching trends and seeing what’s going on, and right now there are some really cool things happening on TikTok.
Something that hasn’t happened on other platforms for a long time and that is that the people who are growing and becoming TikTok ‘famous’ are actually getting invitations from celebrities to be part of movies, TV shows, being invited to parties… like this is happening for real you guys!
That is because we are still in this early phase of adoption which does actually change over time.
The good news is that my gut tells me we still have a little bit of time.
By this, I don’t mean you have a little time to wait and then jump on in to TikTok, but I mean we have a little time to get ahead!
My guess is that by 2021, TikTok is going to be the number 1 app of all time.
In 2018, TikTok actually became the most downloaded app of the month beating platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. And it currently has almost 1 billion monthly active users. That is huge!
This means, when I say we have a little bit of time, we need to start building our foundations on TikTok now or you are going to miss out on the early adoption advantages.
I’ve said it before, but I will say it again and again, we are in early adoption. I don’t want you to get hung up on ‘how will I monetise it’ right now and this is so important.
If someone said to you today you could have a billboard in Times Square, would you say ‘I don’t know how to monetise it, let me figure this out first’ NO!! You would say yes, I’ll take it, then you would figure that out later.
Is there a way to directly monetise on TikTok? Yes absolutely, I am proof of this.
However if you actually look at the trajectories of a lot of businesses, the successful ones usually started building a following before they knew how to monetise.
So what I recommend is building first.
Build relationships, really, really strong relationships. Go out and get as many followers as you can.
If you happen to monetise along the way then great! But don’t let this be something that holds you back from starting to build your foundations.
I believe so strongly in TikTok that I actually stopped posting on Facebook and Instagram recently. And this is something that you need to decide for yourself but when I started to look at the difference for me between a normal post that doesn’t hit on TikTok versus my most popular Facebook or Instagram post, I started to see this disparity.
So for example, on Instagram or Facebook, I might reach 1000, maybe 7000 people if I am lucky, but on TikTok I have a ton of videos that have reached a million views.
I regularly create videos that reach multiple 6 figures or even 7 figure audiences which is so cool and so crazy.
It is bringing in a new following all the time and I am growing consistently by 1000 – 2000 followers per day and that is if I am not going viral that month.
The energy and the money that I put into creating excellent Instagram and Facebook posts just wasn’t worth it for me, when TikTok is not only generating leads but getting 100 times or even 1000 times more reach.
And so when I look at the decline of Facebook and Instagram, I know where I am going to put all of my eggs over the next few years and that is the video basket of TikTok and YouTube.
TikTok is currently untapped, viral potentIal and that is so powerful and exciting!
