Ever had one of those days?
You’ve got the numbers. The results. The receipts.
The business is growing. Clients are happy. You’re technically “winning.”
And yet –
Somewhere between the DM replies and the Slack pings and the post-it notes half stuck to your desk – you feel like a fraud. Or worse, like you’re failing.
Been there.
Actually… I’ve sat in that exact feeling on stage, right after keynoting at major conferences. Behind the scenes after massive launches. Even after days where our numbers hit seven figures.
That weird dissonance?
The voice whispering: Shouldn’t you feel more proud right now? Shouldn’t this be enough?
This blog is for that version of you.
Let’s talk about why. And what to do about it.
THE SUCCESS-FEELS-LIKE-FAILURE LOOP
There’s a term I coined after watching this pattern not just in myself but in hundreds of my students: Success Shame.
It’s the guilt, fear, or confusion that creeps in after you’ve hit a milestone… and still feel like a mess.
It sounds like:
- “I should be further by now.”
- “Other people would KILL for these results. Why don’t I feel happier?”
- “I finally got what I worked for… but it doesn’t feel like I thought it would.”
This disconnect can come from a few root causes:
1. You moved the goalpost again.
That goal you set last month? Already replaced. Already not enough.
(Ask me how I know.)
2. Your nervous system is lagging behind your growth.
You’re growing externally faster than your internal systems (nervous system, routines, support, identity) can catch up with.
3. The ‘Everything is Broken’ story is still running.
When you’re operating with a background hum of “I’m behind,” even the best days don’t land.
In one of my own recent seasons, I felt like my whole life was off track. My calendar was chaos. My workouts vanished. I missed meetings. I felt foggy.
But when I finally sat down to write out what was actually broken?
It was like… 12 things.
Total.
Out of thousands of possible factors in my life and business.
That alone gave me peace. Because it reminded me that I wasn’t broken.
I was just overwhelmed.

STEP ONE: DITCH THE LIES THAT CREEP IN AFTER GROWTH
Here’s the hard truth:
A lot of us are chasing external milestones to validate something internal.
- “When I hit $10k/month, I’ll feel secure.”
- “When I get featured, I’ll finally feel credible.”
- “When my calendar’s full, I’ll stop feeling like I’m not doing enough.”
But none of those actually fix the deeper problem –
The belief that you’re not enough yet.
So let’s name some of the common lies that sneak in post-success, and replace them.
| The Lie | The Truth |
| “I should be further by now.” | Growth is not linear. There are seasons. You’re not late. |
| “Other people have it more together.” | You’re seeing their highlight reel. They have mess too. |
| “If I rest now, I’ll lose momentum.” | Rest is momentum. It’s what keeps your engine from exploding. |

STEP TWO: ACTUALLY NAME WHAT’S NOT WORKING
One of the most practical tools I use during these identity-fog seasons is the Broken List Exercise:
- Grab a blank piece of paper.
- Write down everything that feels “off,” “not working,” “broken,” or “messy.”
(Ex: missed meetings, waking up too late, not doing content batching, overbooked Mondays, etc.) - Then next to each item, write one simple action step that could improve it.
- Assign one fix per day for the next two weeks.
The point isn’t to fix it all at once. It’s to shift out of shame and into stewardship.
You don’t need to hustle your way out of this fog. You just need small traction.
✅ Here’s what this looked like for me recently:
- Missed 2 meetings → Add a calendar review every morning at 7:30am.
- Waking up too late → Move bedtime 30 min earlier for 3 nights in a row.
- Skipping content batching → Block 1 hour every Friday for batch planning.
Hint: The power’s in the re-alignment… not perfection.
STEP THREE: REDEFINE SUCCESS ON YOUR TERMS
A lot of us are still trying to fit ourselves into someone else’s business blueprint.
Even after hitting our own wins.
You start out just trying to get your first client.
Then suddenly you’re expected to want a team, a funnel, a podcast, a book, a TED talk, a retreat in Bali, and an agency with matching hoodies.
Pause.
What if success was something different for you?
When I left my 9–5 and started freelancing, my definition of success was simple:
Be able to pick up my kids from school.
Then it became:
Hit $5k/month without burning out.
Then it shifted again:
Build systems that let me take a random Tuesday off.
The freedom came when I realized I could opt out of the internet’s expectations.

STEP FOUR: TRACK WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS
Sometimes that success-shame creeps in simply because you’re tracking the wrong things.
You might be:
- Watching revenue and not watching margin.
- Tracking likes instead of leads.
- Focusing on number of tasks finished vs impact made.
- Prioritizing being visible over being valuable.
Take 15 minutes to write a list of:
- What you’re currently tracking
- What actually makes you feel aligned/successful/sane
Cross-reference. Adjust accordingly.

STEP FIVE: YOU’RE NOT THE ONLY ONE FEELING THIS
One of the biggest reasons we stay stuck in success shame is because we don’t talk about it.
We isolate. We overperform. We fake it.
But here’s what I’ve learned (over and over again):
The people who seem the most “together” online…
Are often the ones silently wondering if they’re falling apart offline.
Which is why I built The Clique.
Because I wanted a place where we could be real about the wins and the fog.
Where we could reset our rhythms without shame.
Where you don’t need to be perfect to belong.
💬 If you’re craving that kind of space, we’d love to welcome you inside.
