Why Your Instagram Isn’t Growing – and How to Fix It FasT

By Rachel Pedersen

Let’s rewind to early 2023.

Despite having 169,000 followers, I was losing followers every day.

Engagement? Flatlined.

Reels? Underperforming.

Posts? Getting buried.

And I was so over it that I literally tried to delete my account.

Instagram wouldn’t let me – thanks, verification badge – so I was stuck. Mad. And a little bit desperate.

So instead of quitting, I got nerdy about it.

I became my own guinea pig, testing every growth hack, trend, and strategy I could find – and cross-referencing the results with tools like SocialBlade.

What came next changed everything: over 7,500 new followers in a single month, 100,000s of new followers total, millions in reach, and a system that I still use (and teach) today.

Now I’m pulling back the curtain on what actually works in 2025 – and how you can fix your stalled Instagram in the next few days.

First: Why Your Instagram Isn’t Growing Anymore

Here are the 5 biggest reasons most accounts stop growing – even after they’ve done “everything right.”

1. Your Content Is Focused on You, Not Them

Your audience doesn’t follow you to see what you ate for lunch or how pretty your Canva template is. They follow you to solve a problem they have.

If your posts aren’t offering immediate, visible value to them, they’re not going to watch, engage, or share – and your growth will stall.

>>> Shift your focus to creating content that educates, entertains, or empathizes with the specific problems they’re facing. This is what I call “The Share Trigger.”

2. You’re Still Posting the Wrong Formats

Photo dumps? Gone.

Aesthetic stills? Flatlined.

If you want reach right now, 90% of it is going to come from short-form video – especially Reels.

And if you’re not posting Reels, or your Reels look and sound just like everyone else’s… it’s game over.

Most of my viral content today falls into 1 of 4 categories:

  • Value Reels: Fast, actionable tips
  • Viral Reels: Trends, duets, pop culture takes
  • Vulnerable Reels: Real talk, real stories
  • Variety Reels: Unexpected angles or skits

If your grid is missing any of these, it’s time to restructure.

3. You’re Not Using “ManyChat Style” Lead Gen

Reels can get you eyeballs – but they won’t grow your business unless you turn those eyeballs into email subscribers, leads, or buyers.

I use a combination of value Reels + CTA comments + ManyChat to automatically deliver freebies, drive conversations, and build my list – all while I sleep.

One Reel using this system brought in 872 leads in a single day.

4. You’re Not Batching Your Content (And You’re Too Tired to Create)

This was my biggest breakthrough.

I was so burned out from trying to post daily that I eventually developed a method for batching 3 months of content in one sitting – using a combo of “Content Blocks” and strategic repurposing.

My batching schedule saved me 20+ hours a week, and I teach it to every client now.

Client example?
Elise, one of my students, went from posting once a week to scheduling out an entire quarter of Reels in a weekend. She doubled her reach in under 30 days.

You don’t need to create more… you need to create smarter.

Learn the exact method in the FREE Content Creation Training – or grab the paid system if you’re ready to go all-in.

5. You’re Not Updating Your Caption Strategy

Instagram is reading your captions now. Long-form content with strategic keywords is performing exponentially better than short quips or emojis.

But it’s not just about keyword stuffing – it’s about writing content that hooks and holds attention.

Here’s what I teach:

  • Open with a curiosity-based hook (question, bold statement, pain point)
  • Share value (tip, lesson, story)
  • Use a clear CTA at the end (what to comment, do, click, or save)

Fixing It Fast: What to Do This Week

If your account’s gone cold, here’s what I’d do (and have done) to revive it in the next 7 days.

Day 1: Run a Reality Check

  • Check your top posts over the last 90 days
  • What themes or formats worked?
  • What fell flat?

Use SocialBlade to analyze your public growth trends and identify whether your problem is visibility, engagement, or conversion.

Day 2–3: Batch Your Content

Use my “Content Block” method to create:

  • 3 Value Reels
  • 2 Viral takes or skits
  • 1 vulnerable personal share
  • 2 graphic-based carousels

That’s enough to post every other day for 2 weeks.

Want help? My clients use this same method inside the 24 Hour Content Machine – it’s built for busy creators, entrepreneurs, and teams: https://rachelpedersen.clickfunnels.com/24-hour-content-machine

Day 4: Upgrade Your CTAs + Captions

Go back to your last 5 posts and rework the captions:

  • Add better hooks
  • Use longer-form keyword phrases
  • End with one clear CTA (comments, saves, link click, or reply)

Day 5–7: Focus on Distribution

Instagram alone isn’t enough.

  • Turn your Reels into TikToks
  • Share carousels on LinkedIn
  • Embed Reels into your email newsletters
  • Use Pinterest to drive traffic to posts

(Yes – my reach actually grew faster after I stopped relying solely on IG to deliver it.)

What to Expect When You Fix It

No, you won’t go viral overnight. That’s not what this is about.

This is about building momentum consistently – so that every week your visibility, traffic, and conversions are up, not unpredictable.

This is how I turned a flatlined platform into one that drives thousands of clicks and leads – without burning out or selling my soul to trends.

And it’s how my students are growing real, revenue-generating audiences even without a massive team or fancy setup.

Dolly Parton once said in an interview that she wr Dolly Parton once said in an interview that she wrote Jolene and I Will Always Love You on the same day. ✨

I have thought about that contrast more than I care to admit. It says a lot about who she was and how she lived.

Because those two songs are opposites… and they both are her reclaiming her beautiful power (in different ways).

She wrote one of them from the top.

Leaving Porter Wagoner’s show. Walking away from the man who put her on television. Choosing to say goodbye kindly when she did not have to be kind about it at all.

She wrote the other one from the floor. No power. No plan. A woman asking another woman for mercy about her own husband.

Same day. All the power in one hand and none of it in the other.

But my favorite thing is that she didn’t just write them…

She released both. 🎀

She could have kept the vulnerable, scary one in a drawer. Nobody would have known.

She put it out anyway, and it became one of the most covered songs anybody has ever written.

That is how she lived the whole sixty years.

Heart on her sleeve. Song on her lips.

Never a version of herself she was too proud to let us see.

My people hide the ugly parts and messy bits away.

She didn’t. 🤍

So much love,
Rachel

She meant so much to so many of us. And man, she practiced what she preached ❤️🫶

I don’t have words to express how impactful her words, songs, and outlook on life have been for me over my life.

So I’ll allow your own words to reflect back to us the impact of your life.

My dream was to become RICH.

I wanted a better quality of life SO BADLY.

Becoming rich felt like the only way to make it happen.

Now I’m a single mom of 3... 💔

And my new dream is to build wealth (while empowering others to do the same).

I want true freedom to CHOOSE...

And a safety net a mile wide 🙌

If that appeals to you, you’re going to love the ‘next-level’ transparency I am about to share over the coming months.

After nearly 13 years of marriage, we are getting a divorce 💔

We made this decision together - it is not repairable.

A few of you knew something was happening. Thank you for respecting our privacy through these painful matters. I’m sharing this because we shared our relationship with you. I don’t want to lie or pretend like nothing is happening.

Poul is an amazing dad. We are raising the children together as partners 🙏

This is uncontested and amicable. We are not fighting.

He’s also my best friend. Please please please do not attack him or assume about him through this. He’s the father of my children, so hurting him hurts me.

We will only be sharing the full story as needed to navigate our next steps.

Please pray for Poul and the children. Pray for our families. Please pray for me for wisdom to know what to do next.

My heart is beyond broken. His is as well.

But my feet are underneath me, and I have a clear vision of the path I need to take for our children ❤️ their lives and futures above all now.

Edited to add… sorry about my ManyChat responder. I don’t want to look at a computer to turn it off while I’m crying.

Poul H. Pedersen and I are looking for a Household Manager for our family home near Lake Minnetonka: someone who loves making a space beautiful, orderly, and calm, and who genuinely enjoys helping a family run well.

I’ll be honest about why this is referral-only. We’re a family first, and our children’s lives are private. Letting someone into our home means letting them into our world — so trust and discretion matter to us just as much as skill. The right person will understand that instinctively, and hold our family’s privacy the way they’d want their own held.

Here’s what the role looks like day to day:

- Coordinating home services and keeping everything running smoothly — groceries, systems, the hundred small things
- Building processes that make life lighter, and adapting them intuitively as you learn how we live
- Light cleaning and tidying, and cooking
- Driving the kids and being a steady, caring presence when Poul or I travel
- Helping care for our children — you’re not here to be mom or dad, but you’re important in helping us raise them
- Holding short-term tasks and projects while keeping an eye on the long game

What we’re really looking for is a person, more than a résumé: someone adaptable, nurturing, and calm — the kind of steady that can carry a lot at once without losing their warmth. Someone who listens for the details, takes good notes, and reads a moment well. And someone who understands that when we’re with family, I’m simply mom and wife. 🫶

A few practical notes:
- Reliable transportation to the Lake Minnetonka area of Minnesota is a must
- Ideally 3–5 days a week
- Compensation is discussed individually, candidate by candidate
- Interviews are by invitation

If someone you love and trust comes to mind, I’d be so grateful for the introduction. ❤️
