Let me give you the skinny of what TikTok is, b-e-c-a-u-s-e it really is a little different than any other platform out there.
What is TikTok?
TikTok is a fast-growing social media video app where you can create 15 to 60-second video clips, and the important thing is they are u-s-u-a-l-l-y 15 seconds long.
Here’s a look at a15-second TikTok Video of mine: https://www.tiktok.com/@themrspedersen/video/6779288842814967045
The Look and Feel of Your TikTok Video
Your TikTok video will be a looping video that plays over and over again with a soundtrack. Just like the video I listed above.
Maybe it’s a song, or perhaps it’s an audio that you recorded. Or a compilation of your recorded audios or songs.
O-r it could also be something you heard on a TV show and happened to record it. Soundly creative, right?
Overall you want your videos to be at least 8 seconds long.
Audios on TikTok can be created in a whole bunch of different ways, BUT TikTok is a closed ecosystem. What I mean by that is that nothing links out to anything else except for their super users. Their super creators can put a clickable link in the bio, but that’s not always the case. There isn’t any clarity behind when and why certain people get that clickable link in their bio.
The Look of TikTok
As I mentioned TikTok is a closed ecosystem and looks like this; you have:
- a profile
- a profile picture
- a short little bio where you can put a URL that people can copy and paste. In this bio, you can put in as much information as you can fit into 80 characters at this point in time.
Here’s an example of my TikTok profile:
The Feel of TikTok
Now, what’s impressive about TikTok is it’s short attention spans that act like trailers. Meaning people are taking 15 seconds to decide if they want to see more from you.
If they do, if they like your video, they’re going to follow you. Or the potential follower might watch more of your videos and then bring the decision to follow you.
The Neat Thing About Tiktok
The neat thing about TikTok is that every single one of us has a “For You Page.”
Now the “For You Page” is essentially the wild wild west of all the TikTok content presented to us. In other words, content from people that you may or may not follow.
Here are a few examples of “For You Pages”
What I really love about The “For You Page” is that every single time you open it, you can discover new perspectives and unique viewpoints. You see a compilation of every video and how different it is.
TikTok is it For You?
Now some of you might say, “TikTok? It’s so not for me.”
But let me tell you what’s cool about Tiktok. This social media app learns about what you like and what you don’t like and then serves you more with what you are more likely to watch.
So if you do not like what you see in your newsfeed, you gotta stop watching what you don’t like.
Otherwise, videos that you don’t like will show up in your “For You Page,” especially if you’re engaging with those videos.
Why I LOVE TikTok
Here’s what I LOVE about TikTok.
- Offers a new fresh perspective, whether it’s dark humor, sarcasm, cynicism, truth, myth-busting, all these counter viewpoints that we’re being fed in the media.
- Is awesome because people are coming out with different perspectives on various topics,
- Is a place where different connections can be made,
- Why I REALLY LOVE it is that it’s a place to be creative and show yourself in a very, very different way. After all, people buy from people.
Let’s Wrap it UP
TikTok is definitely a social media platform where you need to have the sound ON to enjoy the videos. You can enjoy various soundtracks or double down on creativity and produce your very own audios — creative bliss indeed.
A TikTok video can quickly grab your attention or the opposite – become unnoticeable.
As TikTok puts it, its mission is to “capture and present the world’s creativity, knowledge, and precious moments via short-form videos.”
